Watching the sun set (and taking pictures of it) is one of my favorite things to do. Here we are overlooking Colpoys Bay near Wiarton Ontario. The sunsets have been a little hazy lately and I hear this is a result of all the forest fires out West.
Baden Hill Sunset
Baden Hill is the highest elevation in Southwestern Ontario and after walking to the top of it you know it must be true. Needless to say the view is spectacular. This was taken a few evenings ago looking south west. The sun had gone down behind some cloud cover to the west but left a remnant of colour to the south west that was beautiful.

Today I got an email from a friend telling me that the water going over the St. Jacobs Dam was starting to freeze. Our own mini Niagara Falls she said. With that information I planned to go after work to take a few shots. I was curious about where the sun was setting this time of year in relation to the dam so I went to my favorite website, The Photographers Ephemeris to find out. I was in luck! The sun would be setting in line with the falls. All I needed now was a good sunset.
I arrived with time to set up and as the sun went I took shots from several angles. I was not disappointed. This is one of my favorites.
Thanks Marion for the suggestion! I’ll have to keep an eye on this location to see if the frozen falls expands.

Although this looks like a late fall shot it was actually taken Dec. 28th. This time last year we had quite a bit more snow! It won’t be long before this is snow covered and when it is I will try to get back and take another shot.

I finally got out shooting today. Went for a walk along the tail between St. Jacobs and Conestogo. The afternoon started out rather grey but ended up with a beautiful sunset.

After flying from Toronto to Vancouver to Nanaimo and driving several hours across Vancouver Island we arrived in Tofino. We checked into our accommodations and set out to see if we could get a good sunset shot at one of the famous surfing beaches that Tofino is known for. We went to Cox beach and even though the wind was not very strong the surfers were making the best of it. The sunset was through rather overcast skies but I was able to pull out some colour in Lightroom to come up with this shot. I was a very long first day but we were having a blast!

As the sun set over the still snowy landscape, the warm yellow of the setting sun contrasted with the cool blue of the snow. Some how everything seemed in balance.

It is made up of 5 HDR images. Each HDR (high dynamic range) image is made up of 3 exposures.

Today the Weather Channel created an event on Google+ called sunset day. I went over to the the Conestogo River between Waterloo and Conestogo and got this shot.

This is a 3 exposure HDR processed in Photomatix, Lightroom and Photoshop. Finished off with the oil paint filter in Photoshop.

A lone kayaker paddling into the sunset. What a wonderful way to shake off the tension and worries of the day. You can almost feel your blood pressure go down just watching the rhythmic motion of the paddle.
